SunPower, a subsidiary of Cypress Semiconductor, designs and manufactures high-performance silicon solar cells based on an inter digitated backside contact design, leaving the entire front surface uniformly dark and free of gridlines that normally block light entry., In 2003 SunPower introduced its new, high-performance silicon solar cell – the A-300. These cells are cost-competitive with conventional solar cells, but are much more efficient. With an efficiency of over 20%, the A-300 is the world’s highest efficiency, commercially available solar cell for terrestrial applications. The A-300 cell was developed and manufactured in SunPower’s new facility located in Austin, Texas. This line has a manufacturing capacity of 2MW per year and began operation in January 2003. The company plans to increase its manufacturing capacity to 25MW in 2004. SunPower plans to market the A-300 cells to module manufacturers worldwide. The A-300, while providing performance and aesthetic value, will also make a significant contribution towards cost reduction in the module manufacturing process. The new cell provides SunPower’s customers low-cost access to high-performance cells.
